Make Your Root Canal as Comfortable as Possible

Gums and Your Oral Health

A root canal can be a scary experience. We’ve all heard those stories about how they’re painful, uncomfortable and down right nasty. It’s unfortunate, but many people often think a visit to the dentist will involve some sort of pain or discomfort. “Our team of dental professionals do everything they can to make each patient’s dental visit as comfortable as possible,” explains Dr. Maryam Adibfar, one of Toronto’s best dentists.

A root canal procedure will make just about anyone a bit nervous. That’s natural. But there are some things you can do to make your root canal procedure as painless and comfortable as possible. Dr. Maryam Adibfar – a former Crest spokeswoman and leading dentist in Toronto – shared some unique tips to help make that possible:

1. Rest up: “Patients will inevitably be nervous about a root canal procedure,” said Dr. Adibfar. “But they are likely more nervous than they should be.” There have been many technological advancements in the dental industry that have made a root canal procedure much less painful than decades past. We always recommend getting a good night’s sleep because without rest, you’ll likely be more anxious.

2. Over-the-counter pain medication: “Many people think that a root canal will leave them in a considerable amount of pain,” said Dr. Maryam Adibfar, one of Davisville’s best dentists. “In fact, an Ibuprofen can often help with the minimal pain experienced after the anesthesia wears off.”

3. Don’t lose your appetite: After a root canal procedure, it’s often recommended that you eat on one side of your mouth. This will help reduce the pain experienced and won’t aggravate the tooth area. “Think about having a good size meal before your root canal procedure so you don’t have to worry about eating while your mouth is still numb,” said Dr. Adibfar. “It can also help redcue any nausea that might be associated with the anesthesia.”

4. Relax, relax, relax: Root canals have a bad reputation. They have been stereotyped as extremely painful and uncomfortable. But that just isn’t the case. The advancements that have been made in the dental field have made huge strides when it comes to reducing pain associated with many dental procedures, including root canals. “A root canal is actually designed to help reduce the pain you’ve been experiencing by the affected tooth,” said Dr. Adibfar. “Try to take comfort in the fact that you’re partnering with a trusted Toronto dentist and your root canal procedure is an investment in the long run.”

We believe that no matter what procedure you’re about to undergo, whether a root canal or teeth whitening, you should be fully educated on the entire experience so you know what to expect. That’s why it’s so important to partner with a trusted dental professional. Ask questions and get insight on what you can do before, during and after your dental procedure to reduce pain and maximize comfort.
